The new company Bio-Couture is taking green fashion one step beyond reusable tote bags – they take a “hardening ooze” created by yeast, bacteria and green tea and use it to make a kind of fiber. That fiber, ultimately, can make clothes, like the jackets featured at left. Foodstuffs like port wine, curry powder, cherries, and beetroot are used for dyes.

You can follow the process on Bio-Couture’s website, and if you live in London or are planning a trip there in the next few months, some of their creations are featured in the London Science Museum’s “Trash Fashion”exhibit! Talk about eco-friendly! We *heart*! :)

Here at The Manhattan we are in LOVE with all things vintage, so we were excited when we found this item! Take a seat back in time with this nostalgic Pan Am airplane window. Interesting and unique, the window is a part of the last existing Pan American Boeing 707, the N880PA, making it a rare and extraordinary collectors piece for pilots, airplane aficionados, world travelers and anyone who keeps their eyes on the skies.
Pan American, a household name in air travel used the Boeing 707 for the first pure-jet service from New York to Paris. This piece of history is considered "green" (reclaimed components), is made entirely of aluminum, includes necessary mounting hardware and instructions, and will cost you $1,500. Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people like you. The charity distributes these shoes free of charge to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 10 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes (currently donating one pair every 9 seconds.) The shoes have been distributed to people in over 125 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States. Soles4Souls has been featured in Runner's World, Ladies’ Home Journal, National Geographic’s Green Guide, and The New York Times. It has appeared on CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, BBC, CNN and thousands of other news outlets. Anyone can join their cause, and they need your help.

Soles4Souls facilitates the donations of shoes, which are used to aid the hurting worldwide. Shoe companies, retailers, and individuals can donate footwear (both new and used).

The idea behind gifts of shoes is nothing new to the Soles4Souls team, as they coordinated relief efforts for the Asian Tsunami and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, netting over 1 million pairs donated for these disasters. The team originally operated as www.katrinashoes.org with several churches partnering in the collection and distribution of footwear.

Soles4Souls Is Green!
How is Soles4Souls green? They offer a simple way to help reduce the strain on our environment: donate your "gently worn" footwear to people in need instead of throwing them away. Last year alone, Americans discarded more than 300 million pairs of shoes. When these shoes break down in our landfills, the toxic glue that holds the shoes together can leak into our water supply and atmosphere.

Soles4Souls can save your shoes from early death by cleaning them and shipping them to needy people around the world, who will treasure the gift for years to come. Since its inception following the Asian tsunami, Soles4Souls has distributed over 10 million pairs to people in 125 countries, and our efforts have been publicized in thousands of articles, including the Green Guide by National Geographic and Runner's World.

Most of our closets are filled with shoes we rarely wear. Instead of dropping the unwanted pairs in the trash, consider donating your unwanted pair to Soles4Souls. If you are a retailer or an individual outside the U.S. and you would like to donate, please read the attachment below, or visit their website:

Eco-Friendly fashion has made its way into the hands of our girls on "Sex & The City (SATC)." Technically, if you think about it, eco-friendly fashion is nothing new for SATC. Our lovely Carrie Bradshaw continuously did her share of recycling fashions throughout the series by shopping for vintage finds.

In the new film, the Queen of "Bling" Samantha Jones is spotted carrying an amazing silver Mega Ecoist Tote Bag which is created entirely from recycled candy wrappers, food packaging, and other forms of "trash." This tote is Fair Trade, retails for only $178, and a tree is planted for every bag sold! Can't get any better than that! :)
