A while back we wrote a post on how your hair can help clean up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  About two weeks ago, BP informed Matter of Trust that its oil-soaking needs are being met with synthetic booms (which are likely made with petroleum-derived products *sigh*). The problem with synthetic booms is that they eventually need to be placed in a landfill or burned, causing further pollution. However, natural materials like fur, hair, and feathers can be composted. Plus, the hair boom method worked rather well in the Cosco Busan oil spill in SF back in 2007. So Matter of Trust is still accepting donations, and the group is instead working with Gulf Coast parishes and counties as well as official government hazmat teams. ALL salons, groomers, alpaca and llama fleece farmers, individuals, & pet owners can sign up to donate hair, fur, fleece, feathers, nylons and funding. It's fast & FREE.

Will these hair booms solve the bigger problem? No, but at this point, any bit helps.
